No More Hunger Season!

Seeing one’s children not having enough food tends to hurt most parents’ feelings. Failure to provide for the family makes parents to feel like they have failed their children. Here is a story of a farmer who used to struggle to provide enough food for the family however things changed when Africa Windmill Project stepped into the scene and started an irrigation club in his area.

Ndazi Chivula is a farmer of Tiyesenawo club, who practices irrigation farming and is married to Sarah Chivula, together they have four children. During the past years Ndazi was practicing irrigation farming but he used to struggle to feed his family and make ends meet. Back then irrigation farming to him was just a hobby he didn’t know that he could feed his family through this kind of farming and make extra money at the same time. He used to make so many mistakes at this stage in his irrigation farming because he did not have proper guidance on how to plant the crops and how to take care of them when pest attacked.

All this changed when Africa Windmill Project (AWP) came to his village. AWP started an irrigation club where he was taught the right methods on how to properly plant his crops and how he could make money from the crops he had planted. When he started following what he learnt he saw a change in his yields from the crops he was planting. Back then he only planted corn but then he started planting high value crops such as; leaf vegetables, green beans, peas, onions, tomatoes and red beans. He started selling these crops and some he used for home consumption and with that he was able to provide enough food for his family.

Ndazi’s plot is about four and half acres big and currently he has planted red beans, peas, maize and vegetables in his garden which he has invested MK100,000 (USD117.6) from the current crop that he has planted, he is expecting to make a profit of MK200,000 (USD235.3). From his previous sells he was able to buy a goat, a pig which now has piglets, a bicycle and was able to buy school uniform and pay school related fees for his children. He uses a rope and washer pump for irrigation and this makes it simple for him to irrigate his crops because he is the only one who handles the farm work in his household.

Ndazi is grateful for the guidance AWP gave him in his irrigation farming and the tools that AWP made available to make his irrigating process simple.  At the moment he is able to provide enough food for the family and enough resources for the family to use. Ndazi says he is willing to teach other farmers to start irrigation farming using the right knowledge which he has learnt from the trainings AWP conducted. It is interesting to note that the training that AWP is providing to rural farmers is having ripple effects in the lives of people in the rural areas.

With $50 one can empower a household with a rope and washer pump and with $2,100 one can empower a household with a windmill and all its accessories to allow a household END HUNGER AND POVERTY.  Please consider donating to Africa Windmill Project today.
