Windmill

The wind powered water pump design being used by Africa Windmill Project is based upon the Panemone design from Persia which dates back to 500-1500 AD.  The panemone wind pump uses a vertical axis design which has a stationary wooden post.  The 'sails' spin around and produce the turning energy needed to operate a water lifting pump.  The sails pivot 180 degrees within each vane which allows the panels to be in a closed position on the down wind power stroke and open in the upwind stroke.  The panemone design is simple, fast to build, and the moving parts have minimal friction.

The water pump portion is built using a rope and washer lifting pump.  It is a very simple device consisting of a plastic pipe that a rope with rubber washers travels through to constantly lift the water from below the ground to the surface.  For every foot the rope travels through the pipe a column of water the same length is pulled through the pipe vertically.  The panemone wind mill is connected to the rope and washer lift pump with a pulley system.  The pump can be repaired or modified very easily with minimal tools.

The panemone windmill and rope and washer lift pump combination can provide year round irrigation in a rural African Village.  Simple irrigation enables the farmers to provide for their village a localized stable food source year round, which is currently lacking in most of the Southern African Region.
